History and story
The surrounding ensemble includes buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries rather than a square created in one single year. Georgian, European and Eastern influences meet in its façades. There is no basis for describing all the buildings as exact copies of European originals.
What to see
Davit Khmaladze’s 2007 statue depicts Medea, daughter of the king of Colchis in Greek mythology. She holds the Golden Fleece, not a live sheep. The symbol recalls Jason and the Argonauts and the connections between ancient Colchis and Europe.
Visiting information
Look at the façades and the nearby Astronomical Clock. Concerts and celebrations are occasional, not a daily promise. A café stop can be combined with Piazza and a walk to the waterfront.
